15:15 RadSolver - Sensitive Affordable Gamma Imager I Khodyuk*, CapeSym, Inc.
; J Fiala, CapeSym, Inc.; S Motakef, CapeSym, Inc.
Abstract: RadSolver gamma imager concept is based on a new digital approach to a well-known phoswich configuration: a stack of two dissimilar scintillators connected to a single readout. With modern digital electronics, the total count rate, as well as undistorted spectral information of the energy deposited in each scintillator, is obtained providing accurate nuclear ID signature as well as the direction of the detected gamma radiation. RadSolver detectors are fabricated from conventional off the shelf scintillators and can be produced over a range of sensitivity, energy resolution, and cost. The RadSolver imagers hold the promise of significantly enhancing the efficiency of search and locate point and distributed gamma sources. The portable scan-home detectors can be placed in a vehicle or carried into the field and mounted on tripods to map large areas and localize isotope-specific radiation sources. The robot-driven RadSolver systems can be expected to appreciably accelerate the search operations through deployment of a multitude of robots, keeping the search party away and safe from potentially high-intensity sources or conflict zones.

15:30 The Use of Smart Scintillation Detectors in Installed and Portable Health Physics Instruments BS Asamoto*, HI-Q Enironmental Products Company, Inc.
; S Kocvara, VF, a.s.
Abstract: Using innovative smart scintillation detectors rather than gas flow detectors or pulse counting scintillation detectors in health physics instruments brings many features and benefits, including; (1) elimination of gas supply to the instruments, (2) integration of processing electronics, memory and HV power supply in each detector with a standard serial interface enabling automated and faster calibrations, easier and faster replacement of the detectors in installed monitors. This results in reduced downtime, common interfaces between similar products resulting in fewer spare parts and other efficiencies of scale. Gasless scintillation detectors offer high sensitivity to alpha and beta radionuclides enabling low detection limits, integral two-channel electronics providing alpha discrimination and excellent uniformity of response. These and other features will be discussed during the presentation and examples of both installed and portable contamination monitors using smart scintillation detectors will be presented (whole body contamination monitors, hand and foot monitors, frisking contamination monitors, floor contamination monitors, portable activity monitors etc.).

15:45 Radioactive Standards for Instrument Calibration UF Beinlich*, Eckert & Ziegler Isotope Products
Abstract: Various types of radiation sources and solutions are used for the calibration of alpha, beta, gamma and neutron measurement instruments. The design and activity level of a radioactive standard depends on its application. This presentation will give an overview about available standards, manufactured at 3 Eckert & Ziegler sites in the US and in Europe, calibrated at ISO17025 accredited laboratories. Special focus will be on specifications and designs of NIST traceable alpha/beta reference sources for contamination motoring meeting ISO Standard 8769: 2016.

16:30 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Deployed Radiation Measurement System K Kaletsch*, Environmental Instruments Canada Inc.
; Kaletsch
Abstract: A suite of radiation measuring instruments, designed for deployment on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), is being developed. Because the payload of UAVs is limited, the weight to performance ratio of the instruments has to be optimized. By deploying radiation sensors on UAVs, personnel do not need to enter potentially hazardous environments. UAV deployment also allows large areas to be surveyed rapidly. Components of the system include: a high sensitivity gamma detector, a wide measurement range gamma detector, a gamma spectrometer, a neutron detector and an active airborne alpha, beta, gamma sampling detector. Using scintillators and Silicon Photomultipliers, the system does not use toxic materials or high voltage and the weight to performance ratio is optimized. Sensor performance should not negatively impact (or be impacted by) the operation of the UAV. As well real‐time data transfer from the sensors to the field operators is required. Data visualization and interpretation tools are also being developed. The current status of this project will be presented.

16:45 RN SUITE: a Synthetic Radiological Training Environment JH Winso*, Spectral Labs
; JB Rolando, Spectral Labs
Abstract: RN Suite Is a compact, cost effective tool that enables live performance of Radiological training exercises without employing live Radioactive Sources. Given the extraordinary potential for devastating consequences from RAD/NUC events, it is vital that Law Enforcement Officers and Responders be properly equipped and trained to detect, prevent, and mitigate each potential threat. Effective response depends on regular and repetitive training and practical exercises to optimize the expertise of officers on the ground. To be realistic, such training must involve learning objectives related to responding to radiological sources. This presents a major problem for many organizations because of the logistics difficulty and cost of bringing radioactive sources to a training location.
The RN Suite Technology being discussed and demonstrated here is an easily deployed solution for setting up a Synthetic Radiological Training Environment. RN-SUITE is based on miniaturized (½ ounce, 1½ inch wide) Beacons housing micro RADARs that set up a coordinated mesh with accurate positions for each Beacon relative to other Beacons and a Base Station. The Beacons can be configured to represent radiation sources by isotope and strength, shields of various attenuation, and Personal Radiation Devices, Backpacks, or RadioIsotope Identifier Devices. Using an Algorithm developed by SLI for an Immersive Simulation Training Package combined with the Radiation Detector User Interface depicted on a Smart Phone interconnected with a Base Station, the operator gets real time indication of the detector reading detector position relative to sources and shields.

17:00 Odyssey: A Web-Based Modern Management System for Radiation Safety Programs BM Ramsay*, Versant Medical Physics
; IA Ramsay, Versant Medical Physics; DA Roller, Versant Medical Physics
Abstract: Odyssey is a cloud-based software suite of radiation safety tools designed to assist radiation safety experts and healthcare professionals in managing their radiation safety program and increasing compliance. Odyssey is hosted on Amazon Web Services for data security and scaling and acts as a centralized location for data entry, storage, and analysis to improve efficiency and reduce cost. The primary focus of Odyssey is to provide innovative tools for radiation safety program management. Users can easily manage laboratories by uploading maps and survey information, viewing status logs and comments, and cataloging radioactive material inventory. Machines and instruments can be tracked for maintenance, quality assurance, and calibration. In addition, Odyssey has a permitting system to ensure that any authorized users, radioactive material, and machines entered into the software are allowed based on existing licenses and regulations. The software allows for the management of personnel dosimetry programs with multiple vendors, as well as the creation and assignment of educational courses. To assist with these radiation safety duties, Odyssey has a unified scheduling system with task delegation and alerts, form creation and image editing, and a document library with a shared repository. Together, Odyssey’s features create a comprehensive system that removes procedural barriers to effectively manage both large and small-scale radiation safety programs.
