Welcome to JMIH 2025
9-13 July

Welcome

The Local Host Committee is excited to welcome you to the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in the vibrant city of Saint Paul, Minnesota! The JMIH conference is being held at the RiverCentre which is located in the heart of Saint Paul. We would like to introduce you to our capital city's rich history and the breadth of experiences awaiting you.

As attendees of the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Saint Paul, Minnesota, we acknowledge that we are on the ancestral lands of the Dakota people, an area known as Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota). We recognize and honor the Dakota, Anishinaabe, and other Indigenous nations who contributed to this region for generations and continue to reside here. As scientists and guests, we commit to respecting Indigenous knowledge, supporting Native-led initiatives, fostering partnerships, educating ourselves and others about Indigenous peoples' contributions, and hearing the voices of Indigenous people. We want to extend a special thanks to Sam Zimmerman (Ojibwe Nation) for his arts contribution to the 2025 joint meeting logo.

The city of Saint Paul's started with its strategic location on the Mississippi River. The initial settlement was known as Pig's Eye Landing, but was later renamed Saint Paul in 1841 by Father Lucien Galtier, who found the name Pig’s Eye Landing to be distasteful. The city quickly grew as a vital trading center and stopping point for settlers heading west. In 1849, Saint Paul was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory, and it has remained the state capital since Minnesota's admission to the Union in 1858.

During your stay, you'll find no shortage of exciting activities to engage in. The Science Museum of Minnesota, located across from the Saint Paul RiverCentre, offers five stories of scientific exploration, perfect for satisfying your curiosity beyond your field of expertise. The nearby Bell Museum, associated with the University of Minnesota, features exciting natural history exhibits and a planetarium. For further exploration of flora and fauna, the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is a must-visit, offering a diverse collection of animal species and tropical plants in a tranquil setting with free admission. Other nearby outdoor activities include the Minnesota Zoo and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Nature enthusiasts will be delighted by Saint Paul's outdoor offerings. The city boasts more shoreline along the Mississippi River than any other city on this mighty waterway. Take advantage of this unique feature by enjoying activities such as kayaking, fishing, or simply strolling along the riverfront. For those who prefer land-based pursuits, the extensive Three Rivers Park system offers numerous hiking and biking trails to explore.

Finally, Saint Paul, like its twin city Minneapolis, was deeply affected by the tragic murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. While visiting Saint Paul, you may wish to pay respects at the George Floyd Memorial, located at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in neighboring Minneapolis. The memorial features murals, sculptures, and tribute spaces that honor Floyd's life and other victims of racial injustice. The Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, dedicated to African American history and culture, provides insight into the local community's experiences and struggles. These locations serve as important spaces for reflection, education, and ongoing dialogue about racial equity and social justice in Minnesota and beyond.
