The Student Advisory Committee together with SWAN’s Membership Committee have created a travel award, the “SAC Student Travel Award.” The award will help defray travel and meeting expenses of new or returning student members. The SAC Travel Award is open to all undergraduate and graduate students only from the host country (i.e., from the country where the Annual Meeting is being held this year). The award is limited to 20 recipients who will be randomly drawn from the pool of eligible applicants and would receive $175 USD cash at the Meeting.

El Comité Asesor Estudiantil junto con el Comité de Membresía de SWAN han creado un premio de viaje, el "Premio de Viaje Estudiantil SAC". El premio ayudará a sufragar los gastos de viaje y reunión de los miembros estudiantes nuevos o que regresan. El SAC Travel Award está abierto a todos los estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado solo del país anfitrión (es decir, del país donde se lleva a cabo la Reunión Anual este año). The Applicant/El/La Solicitante:

• Must be a student living/working in the host country,

The Southwestern Association of Naturalists is granting student travel awards to help defray travel and meeting expenses for students attending the 70th Annual Meeting to be held on 3- 6 August 2023 at Marriott Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. These awards will be given to students currently enrolled in an institution of higher education outside of the USA who are presenting papers or posters. Students must be current SWAN members, registered for the 70th Annual Meeting, and first author on a paper or poster. Those who have received two travel awards previously are ineligible. Deadline for application is 1 June 2023. To help you with the proposed budget, here are estimates of some of the costs:

La Asociación de Naturalistas del Suroeste está otorgando premios de viaje para estudiantes para ayudar a sufragar los gastos de viaje y reunión de los estudiantes que asistirán a la 70.ª Reunión Anual que se llevará a cabo del 3 al 6 de agosto de 2023 en el Marriott Riverwalk Hotel en San Antonio, Texas. Research must be primarily the work of the student, not of the major professor, and the student must be both a member of SWAN and first author. From those submitting written summaries, a judging panel will select up to approximately three students to make oral presentations (15 minutes in length) in a special plenary session consisting of approximately six students competing for the Wilks and Student Field Natural History Awards combined at the beginning of the Annual Meeting. A winner for each award will be selected from this group of six based on the quality of the oral presentation and the significance of the results. Finalists will receive a $250 USD honorarium to cover the costs of attending the meeting and all finalists are required to attend the annual banquet. The Wilks Award recipient receives an additional cash award of $1000 USD, a certificate, and a set of all available back issues of The Southwestern Naturalist. The winner will be announced at the Annual Banquet.

El Premio Wilks se otorga al estudiante que realiza la mejor presentación oral en la Sesión Plenaria de la Reunión Anual de la Asociación. Like the Wilks Award, the presented research must be primarily the work of the student, not of the major professor, and the student must be both a member of SWAN and first author. From those submitting written summaries, a judging panel will select up to approximately three students to make oral presentations (15 minutes in length) in a special plenary session consisting of approximately six students competing for the Wilks and Student Field Natural History Awards combined at the beginning of the Annual Meeting. A winner for each award will be selected from this group of six based on the quality of the oral presentation and the significance of the results. The Clark Hubbs Student Poster Awards are presented to students displaying the three best posters at the Annual Meeting of the Association. The first place award provides a certificate, a cash award of $600 USD, and a set of all available back issues of The Southwestern Naturalist. The second and third place awards will receive $400 USD and $300 USD, respectively. Although posters may be coauthored with the major professor, the work presented must be primarily that of the student and the student must be the first author and a member of SWAN. A panel of judges will select the winners based on the quality of the visual presentation and the significance of the results.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 16 June 2023.

Los Premios al Póster Estudiantil Clark Hubbs se entregan a los estudiantes que exhiben los tres mejores posters en la Reunión Anual de la Asociación. El premio del primer lugar proporciona un certificado, un premio en efectivo de $600 USD y un conjunto de todos los números anteriores disponibles de The Southwestern Naturalist. Los premios del segundo y tercer lugar recibirán $400 USD y $300 USD, respectivamente. The Howard McCarley Student Research Fund provides as many as eight awards annually, up to $1000 each, to support student research. Applicants must be students (undergraduate or graduate) currently enrolled in an institution of higher education, a SWAN member, and be sponsored by a faculty member. Awards will be made in support of any aspect of research on biota of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America except for travel to meetings. Individuals may receive a maximum of two grants from the Association. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, especially those in developing countries. Grant applications may be in either English or Spanish. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted in support of the application. One must be from the research advisor and the second from someone familiar with the student’s academic career and proposed research project. The winners will be announced on April 30 in the SWAN webpage and social media, and also at the banquet at the next annual meeting to be held in San Antonio, August 3-5, 2023. The award checks will be sent by regular mail to the awardees residing in the US, and by electronic transfer to those outside the US right after the winners are announced.

El Fondo de Investigación Estudiantil Howard McCarley otorga hasta ocho premios al año, de hasta $1000 cada uno, para apoyar la investigación de los estudiantes. Los solicitantes deben ser estudiantes (licenciatura o posgrado) actualmente matriculados en una institución de educación superior, miembro de SWAN y patrocinados por un miembro de la facultad. Los premios se otorgarán en apoyo de cualquier aspecto de la investigación sobre la biota del suroeste de los Estados Unidos, México y América Central, excepto los viajes a las reuniones.
